Research your travel destination. Know where local hospitals and pharmacies are located. Call ahead to verify that the hotel can accommodate any special needs. Be aware that airline travel or traveling to high altitude destinations can create health concerns for individuals with anemia and decreased oxygen carrying capacity. If you do travel to a higher altitude location, experts recommend getting a complete blood count (CBC ) panel and taking precautions to get anemia treated with blood transfusions or medications prior to traveling. Before you leave, call your health insurance company to see if you are covered in other states, or if you need to go to a certain hospital or doctor if you need treatment.
