A Night in New Orleans – Snapshots from my journey.
Touring around the area worst hit by hurricane Katrina, we saw the aftermath of what had happened and the areas that are still not rebuilt. Hearing first hand stories of family lost, the science behind both the natural factors and the preventable in this disaster; I shed a silent tear behind dark glasses. In stark contrast we visited the visually stunning heritage Garden District and learnt that when Katrina hit, the bulk of the defence efforts went to protect this more ‘commercially viable’ area rather than the low income residential sector of the Lower 9th. I don’t pretend to understand the situation, the politics or the infinitely difficult decisions that were made at the time; but it brought home the scale of a disaster, the likes of which I never seen in my life.
